Dr. Linda Swayne has won the J. Murrey Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award. Swayne is a professor of marketing in UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business. She was honored at a reception on October 18, 2017, in the Library’s Halton Reading Room.
The Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award is given to a UNC Charlotte faculty member who has engaged in innovative or exceptional work with library collections, programs, and services. The award, given in the fall, along with a $2500 allocation for professional development, enables the library to recognize outstanding faculty contributions to the library’s mission, vision, and strategic initiatives.
Dr. Swayne was nominated for the 2016-2017 award by Nicole Spoor, Business Librarian at Atkins Library. The award committee recognized Dr. Swayne for her work to promote the library as an essential campus resource and her willingness to incorporate information literacy into her courses.
Dr. Swayne’s assignments take the form of a competition in which her students use the library as a resource to create competitive marketing plans. Her high expectations of her students demand that students use complex research skills throughout her course and utilize a variety of resources from the library.
“I am passionate about students’ learning by doing and having an outstanding library and staff makes that possible,” said Swayne. Throughout her class curriculum, students must go beyond cursory searching in order to find information that isn’t given to them by the company with which they are working. Students must not only be able to find relevant sources, but also be able to interpret and evaluate resources and apply the information in new ways.
Dr. Swayne has also been a great advocate for the library by pushing to get resources that benefit students. Last fall she was able to secure partial funding from the College of Business in order for the library to provide access to a database of private company information. This database not only supports the curriculum in her course, but also many other courses in various departments throughout campus. The database, utilized by the University Career Center, is also employed by students during their job search.
“Atkins Library has been a gem in UNC Charlotte’s crown for years,” said Dr. Swayne. “I [am] aware of the efforts by our library staff to be ahead of the curve in technology and appreciate the efforts of all the librarians to maintain Atkins as a library to emulate.”
Dr. Swayne received her Ph.D. in marketing from the University of North Texas. Her expertise is health care marketing, positioning strategy, and strategic management of healthcare organizations. Swayne joined the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1981. She has served as president of the Charlotte Chapter of American Marketing Association, Southern Marketing Association and Southwestern Federation of Administrative Disciplines. Dr. Swayne has written eleven textbooks. Her co-authored textbook, “Strategic Management of Healthcare Organizations,” is in its fourth edition.
