Computer Usage Policy

The computing and networking facilities in the J. Murrey Atkins Library are provided to support the educational and curriculum-related research needs of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Atkins Library supports free access to research materials and the use of computing technologies to identify, locate and use scholarly resources.

  1. Use of Library computers is governed by UNC Charlotte “Policy Statement #66:  Responsible Use of University Computing and Electronic Communication Resources” (  and local, state, and federal laws.  These laws and policies cover such areas as illegal access to computer systems, networks, and files; copyright; and harassment issues.
  2. Library computers serve as access points for online catalogs and databases which assist UNC Charlotte students and faculty in their library research and class assignments.  Library staff also use these computers to teach electronic resources to groups and individual patrons. UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff working on course-related projects and research have first priority in the use of Atkins Library computers.
  3. At times, the demand for library computers exceeds the number available.  Users are asked to be sensitive to the needs of others and limit use during time of heavy demand.  The Library reserves the right to reclaim computer workstations being used for personal (eg. email and chat) or recreational (eg. games) purposes.
  4. Members of the UNC Charlotte community should be prepared to show an ID upon request.
  5. Due to the public nature of libraries, individuals should demonstrate respect for individuals’ rights to privacy and freedom from intimidation or harassment.  Users are asked to be sensitive to the fact that some on-screen images, sounds, or messages might create an atmosphere of intimidation or harassment for others.
  6. Downloading from library databases is permitted and encouraged within the provisions of copyright law and contract provisions.
  7. The Library monitors usage of library computer workstations to ensure security and operating performances of its systems and networks.  Any problems should be reported immediately to a library staff member.
