Dean's Welcome Letter

Dean's Welcome Letter

Welcome to the Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The J. Murrey Atkins Library is our main 11-Floor facility located in the heart of the campus. Our Special Collections and University Archives, which is located on the 10th Floor, collects, preserves, and provides access to unique materials on the history and culture of UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte region. The Charles C. Hight Architecture Library is located on the 2nd Floor of the Storrs building, which houses the College of Arts + Architecture.

I invite you to spend time in the Library collaborating, studying, researching with our physical and online research materials, using computers, software, and equipment, getting assistance, enjoying refreshments, learning from exhibits and events, attending an instructional session, or just relaxing with a popular or new book from our Popular Reading Area. We have approximately 1.5 million visits per year. The building has 285,000 square feet with 1,928 seats and 324 computers available for student use. Students can make an online reservation for one of our 57 study rooms.

The library offers over 3.3 million volumes, including 930,000 e-books, over 400 databases, and approximately 75,000 journals, the vast majority available electronically. Our annual collections budget is approximately $5 million. The library is a Federal and North Carolina Government Documents Depository and a registered patent and trademark resource center.

We offer a comprehensive suite of research library services, including reference services, instruction, research guides, video tutorials, circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, and digital scholarship support. A new Technology Support Desk will open on the 2nd Floor during summer 2016 with cutting edge technologies and labs coming soon.

In addition to the library services, the building features Peets Café and a variety of self-service vending options such as the popular Rubi hot beverage dispenser and an office supply vending machine. And you will find that many academic support areas offer services in the Atkins building during active semesters: Writing Resources Center, Speaking Resource Center, Tutoring, and IT Service Desk. Career Services is in the building, but enter their offices outside to the right of the main entrance on the South side of Atkins. Enter the Counseling Center from the east side of the building.

The library is open 24 hours from Sunday at 11 a.m. until Friday at 10 pm. It is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. During finals weeks, we are open 24/7.

We are eager to answer your questions. Students dressed in lime green t-shirts and carrying lime green iPads that say Ask Atkins walk through the building during popular hours. These “roamers” want to answer your questions, direct you, bring you a book or laptop, or help you with printing or other equipment. If you prefer to get help through another means, try our AskAtkins services.

Come and see us soon.
