Technology & Equipment Services aims to facilitate innovative and creative learning by providing technology and equipment lending, research and design workspaces, and technology support services.
Equipment is available to students, faculty, and staff with a valid UNC Charlotte ID and an account in good standing with the library. Equipment must be returned to the Technology Support Desk at least 30 minutes prior to the desk's closing hours to avoid late fees. Do not return equipment to a book drop.
All borrowers must comply with UNC Charlotte's Standard for Responsible Use Policy and Circulation Policies.
Technology Support Desk and Technology Services
The Technology Support Desk is located in the technology wing on the second floor of the J. Murrey Atkins Library. The Technology Support Desk is open from 8am–5pm, Monday–Friday. The service desk supports all of the Library's technology services, including the Makerspace, Visualization Lab, and Multimedia Production Studio. The desk also provides support for Microform and the second floor print/copy/scan stations and VTS machine.
Thanks to our partnership with the College of Computing and Informatics, J. Murrey Atkins Library has acquired additional 3D printers for use in the Makerspace. Our 3D printers are currently managed by the Technology Support Desk, located on the second floor. Technology Services offers 3D Printing services to all UNC Charlotte students and faculty members. Print requests may be made through the Technology Support Desk. Requests to reserve technology in advance will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
3D Printing Equipment and Supplies
- MakerBot Replicator: This 3D printer makes solid three-dimensional objects out of melted PLA filament using fused deposition modeling.
- Ultimaker 2 Extended: This desktop printer features a vertically extended frame that supports high-volume printing of taller objects using PLA filament.
- PLA Filament: Polylactic acid, or PLA, is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources like cornstarch. The 3D printer melts this material and deposits it, layer by layer, to create a 3D print.

iPad Minis are available for check out at the Technology Support Desk for a 24-hour loan period. Students, faculty, and staff can check out and return iPad Minis during the desk’s regular business hours (8am–5pm, M-F).
PC and Mac laptops can be checked out at the Circulation Desk located on the first floor near the main entrance. Laptops are available on a first come, first served basis. The loan period for all laptops is 24 hours. For a list of details and conditions, click here.
