Tutorial: How to Read a Call Number

Step 1

Find a book in the Catalog. Example:

LOCATION	CALL #	STATUS
General Collections	QA76.58 .B46 2002	AVAILABLE

Step 2

First note the collection's LOCATION. Next look at the letters at the beginning of the Call Number.

In the example the letters are QA. Go to the Floor Guide at the right.

If the location is General Collections, determine what floor your book is on using the letters from the Call Number.

In this example, the book would be on the 6th Floor because QA comes after PT and before R.

Step 3

In the Catalog, the Call Number appears horizontally.

However, on the Book Spine, the Call Number will be printed vertically. Example:
