UNC Tomorrow Timeline

UNC Tomorrow Final Report, December 2007

  • On p. 17, Table 1: "Critical Knowledge and Skills For Global Competitiveness," shows the participants in the Community Listening Forums say that "Gathering and Organizing Information" has a average rating of 7.98 (out of 10) importance. This is above the rating for "Cultural awareness and understanding" (7.04) and "Knowledge of a foreign language" (6.09).
  • On p. 13, the report identifies "information literacy" as one of the "soft skills" (along with "oral and written communication, critical thinking and analytical reasoning, problem solving, creativity and innovation, teamwork and collaboration, work ethic and professionalism, financial literacy," . . . "and digital literacy") that need to be improved among students.

UNC Tomorrow Response Phase I, May 1, 2008 (UNCC)

Information Literacy is mentioned in two places, within the Global Readiness chapter:

  • On pg. 7, as a part of "Existing Academic Programs Addressing 21st-Century Skills, information literacy is collapsed with digital literacy within library instruction. Its part with the first-year composition program is noted, but no other place in the curriculum is noted.
  • On pg. 9, one of the "New Initiatives," is the proposed Communication and Critical Thinking program. Writing Across the Curriculum program is part of that program, and information literacy is mentioned as part WAC.
  • On pg. 13, a formal program in "Information and Digital Literacy" is a secondary initiative.
