Best bets: Freely available- be aware of copyright guidelines when using these images.
Wikimedia Commons - images, sound, video - mostly in the public domain - copyright information is given with each image.
Google images. Put quote marks around phrases and be specific (use many keywords). Note: many of these images may not be free to use without getting permission from the owner. Search on the artist's name to find works of art.
Prints and Photographs Online (Library of Congress) - about 1,000,000 digital images.
Flickr Commons - photographs held in public collections - museums, etc. Copyright statements are included.

David Rumsey Visual Collections - over 300,000 images including 1000s of high resolution images of historic maps. You do need to install a viewer, but it is well worth the few minutes it takes to do this. The viewer functions like that associated with ARTSTOR.
Wellcome Trust Images - medical, history, etc. "Teachers, students, academics and the public can now download and use images depicting 2,000 years of mankind and medicine for free.
Microsoft Clip Art and Media - if you are looking for clip art to use in your newsletters, powerpoint, etc. this is a terrific place to find free images.
