Biographical/Historical note

Bruce Stuart Roberts was born on February 4, 1930 in Mount Vernon, N.Y., to Marion McNally and Charles Wesley Roberts. He graduated from New York University (B.S., 1951) and attended the University of Florida in 1954. During the Korean War, Roberts served in the United States Air Force (1951-53). In 1957, he married writer Nancy Correll (b. 1924). They have two children: Nancy Lee and David Correll. Roberts began his career as a reporter with the Tampa Tribune (1954-55). Following a stint (1956-58) as editor and publisher of the Lumberton Post, Lumberton, N.C. and Scottish Chief, Maxton, N.C., he served as a staff photographer for The Charlotte Observer (1959-61) and director of photography for Wilmington, Del., newspapers (1962-63). Since 1963, Roberts has been a free-lance photographer for magazines and books. He has been named Southern Photographer of the Year (1959, 1961) and his book, Where Time Stood Still (1970), was chosen by the New York Times editorial board as one of the outstanding books of 1970.

Scope and Contents note

Contains photographs, including those rejected for publication, typescripts and proof, related clippings and correspondence, as well as published copies of books. Documentation varies from minimal for The Cape Hatteras Seashore to extensive for The Face of North Carolina. Only The Face of North Carolina and David include correspondence. With the exception of the duplicates and the additions, the photographs have been drymounted. The Bruce Roberts Collection is arranged primarily into series by the title of the books documented in this collection. NOTE: The photographs have been matched with copies of the first editions of the books, and consequently they may not match if compared to copies of later editions.
