Biographical/Historical note

Joseph Grier was a Charlotte, N.C. attorney and former chairperson of the Charlotte Park and Recreation Commission, and Mecklenburg County campaign chairperson for Richardson Preyor's 1964 NC gubernatorial campaign.

Collection Inventory

PETITION TO INTEGRATE GOLF COURSE 1951-1975 

Scope and Contents note

This series relates to the Petition of Charles W. Leeper, et al, to the City of Charlotte, et al that sought admission for blacks at city operated Bonnie Brae Golf Course. Includes a copy of the petition (1951) and a letter (9/16/75) to Dean W. Colvard from Grier in which he explains that the property was donated to the city by Otto Barringer under the condition that it would revert to him should blacks be admitted to the park. By order of the North Carolina Supreme Court, the property reverted to Barringer, who later resold the property to the city.
