Biographical/Historical note

Founded in 1946 as a fellowship of Charlotteans interested in a liberal church, the first official meeting of the organized church was held on November 16, 1947. Affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Charlotte congregation was the first Unitarian Church in North Carolina. Lon Ray Call served as minister and organizational advisor of the church during its development as a fellowship. John H. Morgan was chosen as the church's first official minister (1948-51). During that time the church was officially incorporated (see Series 2, Minutes, 11-12-50, 2-11-51). Edward Cahill served 1951-57. Sidney L. Freeman became minister in 1957 and retired in 1989.
