Biographical/Historical note

Susan Davis Nye Hutchison was born in Amenia, N.Y., on August 13, 1790. In 1815, she moved to Raleigh, N.C., to teach and direct the Female Department of the Raleigh Academy. Hutchison moved to Augusta, Ga., in 1823, where she also taught in a female school. There she met her husband, Adam Hutchison (1781 1834), a native of Ayr, Scotland, whom she married in 1825. They had four sons. She returned to Amenia in 1833, where she taught in the District School. Following her husband's death, Hutchison returned to Raleigh in 1835, where she remained for a year until moving on to Salisbury, N.C. to open a female academy. In 1839, she was invited to open a school in Charlotte, which was located at the present day intersection of Tryon and First streets. Hutchison eventually returned to New York, where she died on March 29, 1867.

Hutchison, her grandson, and clippings relating to him. Includes 55-page typescript of portions of the "Journal of Susan D. Nye," which is comprised of a biographical sketch and two journals.
