Papers of the first non-family member to head Cannon Mills. Includes annual reports (1971-74), correspondence, speech¬es, an unpublished company history, clippings, an anti union film (1974), copies of the firm's newspaper (1971-74), and a scrapbook (1929) documenting Holt's football career at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Biographical/Historical note

Donnell Shaw Holt was born in Graham, N.C. on March 7, 1908. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1929. In 1932, he married Margaret McConnell of Gastonia, N.C. Holt became executive vice pres¬ident of Travora Manufacturing Co. in 1938. During World War II, he served as Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy. Holt became plant manager of Cannon Mills Company in 1950, vice president in 1951, and executive vice president in 1959. He was named president and chief executive officer of Cannon Mills Company in 1962. In 1971, Holt became chair of the board following the death of Charles W. Cannon. Holt died in Charlotte on November 20, 1982.

This collection largely represents Holt's tenure with Cannon Mills Company (now Fieldcrest Cannon) of Kannapolis, N.C. Included are annual reports, correspon¬dence, company history, and clippings. A personal item is a scrapbook that documents Holt's football career at UNC Chapel Hill. The Don S. Holt Papers are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
