Biographical/Historical note

The Catawba Lands Conservancy was established in 1991 as a land trust to preserve areas of environmental, historical, or cultural significance in the Catawba River Basin and the Southern Piedmont region of North Carolina. The Conservancy has been in involved in efforts to preserve natural tracts such as the Catawba Wildflower Glen and Mountain Island Lake Wildlife Refuge. Efforts to preserve the refuge at Mountain Island Lake served as a catalyst for the establishment of the Conservancy. The Conservancy is a non-profit, voluntary organization and is a member of the Land Trust Alliance, an organization dedicated to the conservation of land resources across the United States. The Conservancy has a website located at http://www.catawbalands.org/.

Scope and Contents note

The records document the Conservancy’s activities and operations, including efforts to establish the Catawba Wildflower Glen and to protect the Mountain Island Lake Wildlife Refuge. The files also document internal workings of the organization, including activities of the board of directors, efforts to boost membership and participation in Conservancy programs, and liaison relationships with other organizations such as The Land Trust for Central North Carolina. The files contain correspondence, board minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, promotional materials, and newsletters of the Land Trust for Central North Carolina.
