Biographical/Historical note

This collection consists of photocopies of documents pertaining to two prominent families in Charlotte, NC, the Belks and the Everetts. Most of the collection consists of correspondence with Herschel Hill Everett, his daughter, Ann, and her husband, Henderson Belk.

H.H. Everett, known as "Heck" to his family and friends, was originally from Georgia. He and his family moved to Charlotte early in his childhood. Early in his adulthood, he entered the movie theatre business and amassed a fortune over time. He soon became a member of the International Lions Club and was active with that organization. Everett was one of the organizaers of the Charlotte Country Club and the Charlotte Variety Club. He also donated large amounts of money to local charitable causes, especially Queens College and Pfeiffer College. Pfeiffer College conferred him with an honorary Doctorate in Humanities in 1967 for his philanthropy. The Everett's greatest gift to society was the formation of the Everett Foundation, whose trustees preside over the disburesments of funds for scholarships each year. Following the death of President C.C. Jernigan, of Queens College, the board of trustees appointed him to be the interim president during the search for a permanent replacement. He died on November 11, 1973. Cornelia ("Neil") Everett lived until March 8, 2001 (at the age of 103).

Everett married Cornelia Nesbit, and with her had one child, a daughter named Ann, born in 1927. In 1949, Ann married Henderson Belk, of the Belk Department Store chain. Henderson and Ann Belk had five children: Connie, Paul, Jay, Tommy, and Mary.

The Belk Brothers established their first store in Monroe, NC in 1888. Over time, the Belks established dozens of more stores across the southeastern United States and into the mid-west. Today, the Belk brand is one of the most recognizable names in retail.

Scope and Contents note

The collection consists almost entirely of photocopies of original documents (mostly letters, newspaper and magazine articles and photographs) concerning the H.H. Everett family and the Henderson Belk family. The earliest documents date back to 1886, and span to 1971. Most of the collection dates from 1927.

The connection between these two prominent Charlotte families occurred in 1949 when Ann Everett (daughter of Herschel Hill Everett) married Henderson Belk.

A sizable part of the collection consists of photocopies of newspaper and magazine articles of the history of these two families and the contributions that they made to the Charlotte community.
