Biographical/Historical note

Catherine Moose was born to Robert and Catherine Moose on July 25, 1937, in Greensboro, NC. She moved to Charlotte in 1968 at the age of 31. After a divorce in her mid-40s, she enrolled at Queen's College and earned a degree in sociology. She later remarried, to Hugh K. Reid in 1977. It was Catherine's daughter, Jamie, who convinced her volunteer as a Girl Scout leader; and from that position, she was nominated to serve on the board of directors of Family and Children's Services. It was from here where she began her work on behalf of battered women. In the 1980s she was instrumental in establishing a shelter for battered women in Charlotte. Reid gained a reputation as a tenatious fighter in her lobbying efforts and desire to raise public awareness of the issue. She worked for the Mecklenburg Women's Commission and initiated the NOVA Program (New Options to Violent Actions) as an alternative for jail time for violent spouses.

Other than her career with the Mecklenburg Women's Commission, she had a number of other pursuits and interests. She remained active for many years with the Girl Scouts. She was an accomplished gourmet cook, an enthusiastic gardener, and she enjoyed snow skiing.

Reid died on February 15, 2004 from complications from pneumonia.
