Biographical/Historical note

A. Grant Whitney was the man who started the Festival in the Park annual event. This festival takes place over the course of a weekend in mid-September each year and features artists and their work, performers, crafts, food, recreational activities and a wide variety of entertainment.

Over the years, administration of the Fair has been gradually taken over by Julie Whitney Austin, Grant Whitney's daughter.

Scope and Contents note

The Festival in the Park records contains an assortment of papers resuting from the administration of this annual event (primarily in the form of correspondence and lists of concessionaires), photographs and advertising posters. The earliest item in the collection is the cover of a telephone directory, dated 1972 that has a photograph of the Festival from 1971. The bulk of the collection dates from 2000 to 2002.

An associated activity for several years has been the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk, and there are posters advertising this activity for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002.
