Before Brown

"Before Brown” is a collection of oral histories that chronicle the experiences of members of the African American community in Charlotte during the era of segregation.

This collectionwas created in 2004 by the UNC Charlotte Oral History Program and the Levine Museum of the New South to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. 

The collection includes interviews with former students of Rockwell Rosenwald School in Charlotte’s Derita neighborhood. “Before Brown” is a part of the J. Murrey Atkins Special Collections, New South Voices oral history project.
