Recounting her past growing up in a racist, military family, Professor Deb Ryan will speak about the discrimination she has faced in her career, the acceptance she eventually found, and to how those events led to her research and the resultant course entitled Urban Form:Place and Race. The class focuses on how the legal system in the United States upheld discriminatory policies to maintain the segregation of whites and blacks, and how additional local and state policies combined to create Charlotte’s still largely segregated urban form. She will highlight the contribution of local speakers who have lent their expertise to the class especially in their sharing of all the good work the city is doing to confront past mistakes and build a more equitable city.
