New Search System FAQs

1.       Why am I finding things that I can’t view automatically?

The new system opens up your search to find items in libraries around the world, even if Atkins doesn’t have it.  You can limit your search to Atkins-only if you prefer, with the drop-down menu marked “Libraries to search” (choose J. Murrey Atkins Library for all UNCC collections).

2.       What is the “Everything” tab on the Library homepage, and where will it take me?

  • The Everything tab lets you search for all types of material (articles, books, journals, dissertations, manuscripts—anything!) from thousands of libraries around the world.

  • Use the drop-down menu marked “Libraries to search” to limit your search to J. Murrey Atkins Library only.

  • Use the other tabs or search options on the left side of the results page to narrow your search to a certain type of material.

3.       What do I do if something isn’t at one of our campus libraries or available digitally?

Use the “Request through Interlibrary Loan” button and if we can find it we’ll let you know. Interlibrary Loan allows you to borrow items outside of our collection and our new catalog makes the process seamless.

4.       How do I get to journal articles?

  • Enter the article title in quotes on the “Everything” box on the library home page. If it doesn't come up right away, try the title in the Articles tab OR the journal title in the Journals tab next.
  • When you see the right article in the results list, check for the “View Now”  link for electronic items or check for the date the article was published under “Find a copy in the library” to find a print copy at Atkins.

  • Not sure if we have it? If you’ve found the right article in the results, click on Request through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and we’ll try to find it for you, or email askatkins@uncc.edu with the citation for help.

5.       What’s the difference between My Library Account and My WorldCat Account?

My Library Account is run by our library and uses your NinerNet account to log in. You can view items you have checked out from our library, items you have placed on hold, any fines you may have, and renew items here.

My WorldCat Account is a new separate account run by the company that provides our new catalog. You will need to create this account with your own choice of username and password. This is a social account where you can:
  • Create lists of library items you’d like to save or share with others
  • Track updates on interesting lists created by other WorldCat users
  • Save your WorldCat searches
  • Write reviews of items found in WorldCat
  • Tag items to group things that interest you and to share those groups with others
  • For faculty, this profile account makes it easier to create bibliographies, and to put links to these groups into Moodle
6.     Can I still request books from our collection? Can I recall a book that’s checked out to someone else?

  • Yes, you can request books that are on the shelves or that are checked out to other users. Student holds will be delivered to Atkins Library Circulation Desk or Center City Library.  Architecture student books will be held at the circulation desk in Storrs.

  • Faculty and staff also have the option of having items delivered to their offices via campus mail.

  • The new system lets you place holds (which put you next in line for a book checked out to someone else), but not recalls (which would make the other user who has the book bring it back sooner than their original due date). Recalls can still be placed by circulation staff for you—contact 704-687-0491 or come by the Circulation Desk in person to make your request.

  • Alternately, you may request a checked-out item through Interlibrary Loan and we will borrow another copy or purchase a duplicate so that both patrons can use the item at the same time.
