Criteria for Judging Atkins Awards

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING THE ATKINS LIBRARY AWARDS
 
Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
  1. CONTRIBUTION OF RESEARCH IDEA TO DISCIPLINARY FIELD (No more than 1000 words)  (20 Points)
 
Summary of Research Project: Briefly describe the content of your research in light of the following questions.
a.     What is the central goal, thesis, question and/or hypothesis guiding your research?
b.    What contribution does your research make to the disciplinary field of which it is a part?
c.     What are the most significant conclusions you draw from your research?
d.    What literature/data/information do you include in developing your primary argument or analysis?
e.    What specific methods/approaches did you use to analyze the literature/data/information and reach your conclusions?
 
  1. DEPTH AND/OR BREADTH OF PROJECT:  based on statement from # 1)

  1. COMPREHENSIVE USE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES (20 Points)
 
Works Cited:  Please submit a copy of the works cited list from your research project
(Cite in full citation form used in your chosen style manual, including authors, titles, years, pages, etc.)

4.     CREATIVE RESEARCH PROCESS  (No more than 750 words)  (20 Points)
Summary of the Research Process:  Briefly describe the nature of your research process in light of the following questions:
a.     How did you develop or decide upon your primary research questions, arguments or focus?
b.    With whom did you consult to develop a research strategy?
c.     How did you utilize resources from Atkins Library-include databases, journals, electronic materials, media collections, special collections and staff assistance?
d.    What resources beyond those found through the library did you consult?
e.    What research methods did you use? (Did you do work in the laboratory, conduct surveys, read relevant literature, develop case studies, do field visits, conduct interviews?)
f.      What surprised you about the research process?
g.    What was the biggest mistake or misstep you made in conducting your research?
h.    How did you discover it and recover from it?
i.      What was the best technique or thought process that you learned while conducting your research?
j.      What have you learned from working on this project that you will apply to future research projects?

7.     LETTER FROM FACULTY ADVISOR
Your Faculty Advisor must submit a letter in support of your application.This letter should address the significance of your research project as well as the quality of your research process.
