Roerich paintings exhibited in Rowe Gallery

Unearthly Revelations exhibit poster

In addition to more than 6,000 paintings, famed Russian artist Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) designed sets and costumes for theatre, ballet, and opera, including Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring." The final part of his extraordinary career was spent in India in the Himalayan foothills.

Roerich's painted observations of the majestic Himalayan landscape are both straightforward and abstract, representing his view of nature as a truly transcendental creation beyond our complete understanding.

Thanks to the generosity of the late Alice Tate, the university owns a collection of Roerich's works. As a result of a partnership between the College of Arts + Architecture and Special Collections, they are exhibited in the College’s galleries for the first time.

The exhibition continues through September 15 in the Lower Rowe Gallery. Please join us for a reception September 14, 5-7:30 pm. The featured speaker will be Wladimir Witkowsky, Russian art specialist, Sotheby’s.
